Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) glass-epoxy tubes are made by winding glass fibre saturated with epoxy composition on metal cores. The tube structure is programmed. It consists of successive overlapping layers of fibre, each with a specific winding angle. The direction of fibre layering in the layers depends on the type of loads carried by the tube. Most often, these include bending or, less frequently internal pressure, or bending and internal pressure at the same time, and torsion in some cases. Due to the directional properties of glass fibre, glass-epoxy tubes are characterized by a very high anisotropy of mechanical properties. Due to their excellent mechanical strength and electrical insulation properties, glass-epoxy composites are widely used in power engineering as isolating and structural components in overhead and indoor electrical AC and DC equipment.
